Within their book, Grit to Great, Thaler & Koval give some advice on how to develop your grit.  Three of these pieces of advice include:

  1. Talent won’t get you as far as hard work and passion
  2. Success doesn’t come overnight and patience is essential to meeting your goals
  3. Helping others will boost your grit

Lesson 1: Talent won’t get you as far as hard work and passion

We all know those people who seem to succeed without having to put in much effort.  This is especially true within the school age years. This kind of talent, though, rarely leads to success in future life. The only way to develop your grit is to face and overcome challenges.

In order to reach your potential, you must work hard; the more success you have early in life, the less likely you are to learn how to work hard.

In order to accomplish your goals, you need to work harder than everyone else.  The more you daydream about your aspirations, the further away they become.

Lesson 2: Success doesn’t come overnight and patience is essential to meeting your goals

Would you be surprised to learn that Van Gogh created over 2,000 paintings in his lifetime, but during that time he only sold 1 piece to the public?

Most projects within life take a long time to complete, and yet it’s hard for everyone to stay motivated to finish the project.

This is especially true for those who are older.

They think that they will run out of time, which means even if they are passionate about a topic, they will more than likely not find the grit necessary to finish the project.

You can’t let this kind of attitude rule your decisions.  If you want something, it is never too late to get started!

Lesson 3: Helping others will boost your Grit

In today’s society, we typically have a hard time dealing with weather elements outside and prefer the comforts of our temperature-controlled house.

In ancient times, before the luxuries of everyone living in pre-built houses, how did they deal with the uncomfortable weather elements?

They showed grit and worked together.

When you help another person, your own motivation tends to increase.

Not only will you own motivation increase, helping others will build your own character while also allowing you to meet new people.

When this occurs, you typically build your own self-esteem and find connections with other people who share your values.

Anytime you are willing to share your own grit with others, they will share with you, and together you can help build a stronger community.

My Personal Takeaway

After reading this book, I learned that hard work tends to overrule talent or luck in the most situations. I can relate to this myself in many ways, but especially when it comes to school and studying. I belive many have the same chances of getting great grades, but a lot of people do not put in the required hard work to learn enough to achive the highest grades. In many situations, grit will really pay off, and it is indeed important to understand that many of the succesful companies we see today are built by many years of hard work and grit.

Grit to Great inspired me to put more effort into my life, my projects (such as BookSummaryClub) and other aspects, and I hope this summary could spark the same inspiration for you!

Put it into action

  1. Failure is how we learn.
  2. Working harder than everyone else is what wins in the end.
  3. Do not wait for perfect moments.
  4. Make your bed in the morning – sense of accomplishment

I would be happy to recommend this book to anyone that want to achieve something larger with their life. The books gives you more confidence in what you are doing and can give you more inspiration to start something new as it points at that talent isnt a prerequsite to achieve great things in life.
