The Dip Summary

BookSummaryClub Blog The Dip Summary

The lowdown: Discover how to increase your chances of success by preparing for the inevitable dip into difficult and trying times in this The Dip summary.

If you’ve read at least one of my summaries, you’ll know I’m a massive Seth Godin fanboy. This Is Marketing is one of my favorite books out there.

However, The Dip is a little bit different to a lot of Godin’s other work.

In The Dip, we learn how to prepare for the inevitable shitty times we have when managing a business and more importantly, knowing when to quit. Knowing when to cut your losses is just as important!

Lesson One: We all face the dip

Knowing is half the battle, and here is the most important thing you’ll know after reading this book….. WE ALL FACE THE DIP

No matter if it is in a personal project, or in your business, we all face that troubled time.

That dip after our initial motivation and success…. that part where we have to take that next step and it is hard.

Sometimes the dip is there on purpose…

In many med schools across the US, you’ll have to take Organic Chemistry early on. Organic Chemistry is a time-consuming subject that is a, by all reports, a colossal pain in the arse… but do you know what the subject does? It filters out a lot of people who just like the idea of becoming a doctor. If you sit through Organic Chemistry and come out the other side, you actually care.

Others, it is more natural

In our business, we sometimes reach early successes and gain momentum. However, taking things to the next step can be hard… paperwork builds up, you take on more serious jobs, thee are new problems you’ve never faced before.

Regardless of the dip, facing challenges is totally normal.

Lesson Two: Embrace the challenge

Success from the dip comes from facing your challenges.

It is often the challenges from the dip which attract us to a project in the first place.

Sure, the wind can cause havoc when you’re windsurfing, but if the wind didn’t make it difficult nobody would do it.

To push the metaphor even further, it is how you tackle the wind which sets you apart from all the other windsurfers out there.

Lesson Three: Explore all options

Sure, facing the wind is all well and good, but there is a time to give up.

If you try and try again there is no reason to continue throwing your time and resources down the drain.

However, this doesn’t mean that you have to completely cut your losses. You can still use your industry experience to benefit.

For example, if you’ve started a magazine that just isn’t working for you… you don’t have to completely leave the publishing field. Maybe, turn to an online publication and still use the skills and industry knowledge you’ve picked up along the way.

My Personal Takeaway

I think that reading about the dip as it applies to a range of industries is incredibly reaffirming in what we’re doing.
