By finding your passions you can live a happier and more fulfilling life. The three main lessons from the book that’ll help you do that are:

  1. Everyone is born with a purpose. To find it, we need to pay attention
  2. To achieve our goals, we must find our flow
  3. Every moment is a chance to be of service to someone else

Lesson One: Everyone is born with a purpose. To find it, we need to pay attention

We all have moments where everything fells like it is going a bit shit. In those moments, it is hard to believe that we have a purpose in life.

But as the book says, we all do have a unique purpose in life – an essential role to play while we’re here.

However, discovering that calling, you first need to identify what makes you the person you are.

Often those seeds of what makes you you are easy to find; sometimes, they are a lot more difficult.

The more experiences you have, and the more you grow, the more seeds of your individuality you gain and you can come closer to finding your purpose.

However, to find that purpose you need to be self-aware.

When Oprah was a news anchor in the 70s, many feel that a woman with her background had made it. Oprah, on the other hand, knew she wanted something more and was far more interested in interviewing others.

Lesson Two: To achieve our goals, we must find our flow

Have you ever felt like you’re ‘in the zone’? This is usually referring to a short period of time where you are at your most productive.

Many artists and athletes feel this sense of ‘flow’, but what does it really mean?

Being in flow is when you’re ultra-focused to the point where the concept of time falls away. You are wholly devoted to the task at hand.

Finding this area of flow is vital to achieving the goals that you have. To fully find your flow, you need to be working on something that has value to you. You need to be working on your purpose.

The positive energy you generate from doing ‘what you need to be doing’ will propel you to new levels of productivity and new levels of concentration.

Lesson Three: Every moment is a chance to be of service to someone else

The world we live in privileges the individual. There are ads that target specific people and the world breaks well for those who create their own wealth.

However, there is another way to live. You can use your time to help others and not only yourself.

That doesn’t only mean volunteering or donating to charity. You can live a more methodical life. Start to see your life as a series of moments, and how in each moment, you can help someone around you.

You don’t have to help someone by giving them a material benefit, you can look to provide emotional service to someone. That can be something like raising their self-esteem or lending support.

As the old saying goes: “nobody remembers what you said or what you did, but nobody forgets the way you made them feel”.

My Personal Takeaway

While this book is a little different to most that we write about here, I definitely feel a connection with a lot of this book.

As a business owner, I definitely feel the sense of purpose that Oprah discusses in this book. There are moments when I work at my business and enter that area of flow.
