Lesson One: Find the right goals and take action on them

Setting the right goals is so important to your success. Don’t just write some half-arsed goal down because you have been told that you need to do it.

Instead, find a goal that you have a burning desire to achieve. That doesn’t have to be business-related. For example, maybe you want your business to provide for your family. Providing for your family is your goal, your business is the vessel that gets you there.

Once you have the right goals, set detailed plans on how you are going to get there.

Don’t worry, odds are your plan won’t be perfect, but at least you’ll have something.

It is always better to reassess your plan every week than consistently be winging it.

Lesson Two: Knowledge is power, but you don’t have to get it from school

The first thing you need to know when running a business is figuring out what you don’t know.

The sentence seems counter-intuitive, but knowing your strengths and limitations is vital to increasing your chances of success.

You are not expected to know everything. You’re not expected to figure everything out either.

Finding help for what you don’t know is quicker than learning the skills and still not doing a great job. Find people more knowledgeable than you and ask for their advice.

Likewise, it is a terrible waste of time and resources to stuff your head with too many facts. Why spend a lifetime reading every textbook and doing every course when you can learn the basics and learn the rest through the right experiences.

That dedication to lifelong learning and learning through your experiences will set you up for sustained success.

Lesson Three: Successful people are more persistent than unsuccessful people

We all encounter obstacles in life. We encounter daily, sometimes hourly obstacles in business.

The main separator from those who succeed and those who don’t is the persistence to work through these challenges.

This persistence should start by setting the right goals. If you don’t really care about achieving your goals, then you’ve set shitty goals and need to change them ASAP.

From there, try positive self-talk. You will get plenty of chances to pull the ejector lever and abort your business mission, so being able to talk your way through them is important.

The benefits of self-talk and a growth mindset

Not everyone is born with the persistence and desire to keep trucking when times get tough. However, persistence is a skill that can be developed through positive self-talk.

If you start telling yourself that you can achieve, or that you can push through, or that you can find a way through things, then when you face challenges, the positive mantras that you tell yourself will be the first thought that comes to your mind.

Since the book has been published, this growth mindset is taught in schools all over the world as a way to develop resilience and resourcefulness.

At the very least, this tells us that you need to do more than read a book in order to be successful; If everyone who read this was rich, there’d be a hell of a lot more successful businesses.

What this book does do well though, is to give you the basics of creating a positive mindset that will help you take action.

Being in business can be an uphill battle most days. Having the mindset to power through and keep growing will be the difference if you make it or not.

However, you need more than just a great mindset and knowledge. You need to actually take action.
