However, cancer does not have a death sentence to your entire life.
Within Williams’ book, “The Unwinding of the Miracle,” we’ll look at three significant points that showed how she fully lived her life before and after diagnosis. These include:

  1. Julie was born blind, and her grandmother attempted to have her killed
  2. Julie wrestled with the Concept of Hope
  3. As Julie’s cancer began to accelerate, she began planning her death

Lesson 1: Julie was born blind, and her grandmother attempted to have her killed

Julie was born into a war-torn Vietnam, which meant it was already going to be a tough life. Her Grandmother held her for the first time when she was 4-weeks old and saw that she was blind.

The Grandmother knew how hard of a life it would be for both Julie and her parents and vehemently urged them to end Julie’s life early. She recommended an herbalist to Julie’s parents, and after a relentless assault, the parents finally agreed.

Once at the herbalist, the mother meekly asked for what the Grandmother told her to ask for, but the herbalist declined, saying he didn’t believe in killing infants.

The mother rejoiced, and when the matriarch of the family found out (the Great-Grandmother), she said that Julie was to live the way she was born.

Lesson 2: Julie wrestled with the Concept of Hope

At 37 years old, Julie was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer.

They were able to take out the mass within her colon, but there were cancer cells that had spread throughout her body. Once that had happened, all hope of a long life was lost.

Julie never was one to buy into the clichéd terms like “There’s always hope” or “You mustn’t give up hope”. She wanted results and not wishful thinking. This led her to a conversation with a doctor who believed in alternative medicine.

Rather than meeting him at a hospital, he had her meet him on a street corner, and she was quite unnerved when she showed up in a floral shirt!

However, he didn’t want her to have to come to a hospital and have everything they talked about being logged, so he gave her a list of items to attempt to help decelerate the spread of cancer.

Rather than focusing on what she was losing, Julie wanted to focus on the moment and live the best life she could for the time she had remaining.

Lesson 3: As Julie’s cancer began to accelerate, she began planning her death

Strangely enough, one thing which Cancer provides that other tragic events do not is the ability to say a final goodbye and to plan your funeral.

As cancer continued to spread, shutting down one important organ after another, Julie knew the end was coming near.

She talked with her husband. Rather than being cremated, he wanted her to be buried in a casket so he could come and visit and lie next to her. So they bought a plot to make this a reality.

She also wanted to pass away at home. To do that she had to set up Hospice care at the house rather than at a hospital.

Once you are in Hospice, very rarely are you allowed to leave, so it was important to her to have a final farewell at the house.

She had all of her family there, and they were able to be there when she passed away in peace.
