The lowdown: Michael Hyatt’s Your Best Year Ever makes sure that you stick through with your new years’ resolution.
Did you know 80% of teenagers set themselves a resolution every year but only 30% of the people aged 60 or older do?
Sadly, a lifetime of failing to follow through on goals puts us in a negative head space. Once we believe that we can’t make good on resolutions, we stop making them.
In Your Best Year Ever, Michael Hyatt puts forward the blueprint to succeeding on your yearly goals and turning your year into the best ever.

The three main lessons from Your Best Year Ever are:
- Try and work on all areas of your life simultaneously
- Create small habits that lead to long-term success
- Surround yourself with others who can help
Lesson One: Try and work on all areas of your life simultaneously
Have you ever had a crummy day at work and been in an awful mood at home later that day?
It happens to us all. That is why it is important to work on all aspects of your life.
There are ten areas of your life which you should look to work on, in order to live a fulfilling life:
- Mental Health
- Physical Health
- Spirituality
- Intellectual Life
- Marriage or Partnerships
- Parental Life
- Friendships
- Job
- Hobbies
- Personal Finances
All of these areas should be given focus to when trying to achieve something.
Even if your goal is business related, you cannot perform at your best if you lack energy from being physically unfit, or if you’re unhappy at home, or if you are lacking a social life.
So, in order to achieve your new year’s resolution, set out to improve all areas of your life.
Lesson Two: Create small habits that lead to long-term success
Habit creation is the strongest tool in your arsenal when it comes to achieving a long term goal.
By creating short habits, you start achieving on auto-pilot; you take the decision process out of it.
For example, I work out every morning. When I started, every morning was hard work. I had to almost literally drag my sorry butt out of bed and get to the gym. I hated every second of it.
But, after weeks of sticking to it, it became easier and easier to get there in the morning. Then, I started waking up before my alarm.
Now, a few years later, I still go to the gym every morning. In fact, when I don’t get there as soon as I wake up, I feel as though I am missing something.
Working out every morning is now a habit of mine.
Breaking your large goal down and finding small habits that you can do every day to achieve it is vital to succeeding at your goal. What is one thing that is achievable for you to do every day?
For example, maybe you want to increase the number of clients for your agency, and you know that making outreach calls is one thing that leads to results. Setting yourself of a goal of spending 15 minutes a day to make those calls will eventually become a habit.
How long does it take to create a habit?
You may have heard that it takes 21 days to create a habit, but in fact a lot depends on the habit being formed. Some simple ones can take much less time, where something like quitting smoking may take over 200 days.
On average though, it takes around 66 days to create a habit, or a touch over two months for those of you playing at home.
Lesson Three: Surround yourself with others who can help
Positive attitudes breed positive attitudes.
That is why it is important to surround yourself with support groups when setting out to achieve something.
There is a reason Alcoholics Anonymous and Jenny Craig are both still successful after all these years.
Being in a community of likeminded people will help you in a number of ways:
- Support from group members
- Friendly competition between one another
- Group members can hold each other accountable
So, if you want to lose weight, join a supportive Facebook group, or another group that has your back.
You can even look to hire someone to help.
Finding a tutor or a trainer will give you expert advice and the added buy-in of a financial investment.
It is a lot more difficult to go it alone.
My Personal Takeaway
At the time of writing this, we are about to go into a new year. I do have goals for my 2019, but not a ‘resolution’.
One thing that I can take away from this book is to work on all areas of my life, as I feel that at times I can be too work focused, unintentionally neglecting other areas.
Put it into action
To start putting this book into action today, go through the ten areas of life listed below and give yourself an honest score in each area from 0-10.
For example, if your physical fitness has gone to the wayside recently, it may get a lower score than your job area.
- Mental Health
- Physical Health
- Spirituality
- Intellectual Life
- Marriage or Partnerships
- Parental Life
- Friendships
- Job
- Hobbies
- Personal Finances
Finding our what areas you need to work on is the best start to improving yourself.
